- Canine Vaccines -

Rabies - A viral disease that infects both animal and humans. This virus attacks the brain and is very fatal. Although we very rarely see rabies, state law requires all animals 12 weeks and older to be vaccinated. In addition, this must be repeated every year.

DA2PPV - This abbreviation is for the canine combination vaccine given to puppies and adult dogs. This injection protects against canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, respiratory disease caused by adenovirus type 2, canine parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus. Canine distemper and canine parvovirus are the 2 most commonly seen fatal diseases this vaccine protects against.

Bordetella - Bordetella, more commonly known as “kennel cough” or “canine cough”, is a respiratory virus that infects dogs that are not properly protected. This virus causes a distinctive “hacking” cough many time accompanied by fever and a suppressed appetite. Fortunately, bordetella is not a fatal virus, although it does tend to be uncomfortable for the animal and generally last 2-3 weeks. Bordetella infects dogs when exposed to an infected dog or even an area where there is an infected dog.

Lymes - Ticks that infect both dogs and humans transmit Lymes disease. The symptoms include joint pain, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and depression. Lymes disease also affects the heart, brain, and kidneys; it can eventually lead to death.

Rattlesnake - The rattlesnake vaccine simulates the dog's natural immunity, this means that vaccinated dogs experience less pain, recover faster and have reduced risk of permanent injury from the rattlesnake bite. A 3 week booster and then a booster every 6 months should follow the initial inoculation.

- Canine Preventative -

Revolution - a once a month topical treatment applied to the back of the neck between the shoulder blades on dogs and cats 6 weeks of age and older. This product prevents heartworms, fleas, ticks, ear mites, and sarcoptic mange. A heartworm test and an exam within the past year are required before this medication can be prescribed.

Frontline - a once a month topical treatment applied to the back of the neck between the shoulder blades on dogs and cats 6 weeks of age and older. This product treats for adult fleas and ticks.

Preventic - a collar worn around the neck of dogs 12 weeks of age and older and lasts up to 3 months. This product treats for ticks by preventing them from attaching to the dog

Capstar - a tablet given orally in a single dose for immediate relief from fleas in cats and dogs 4 weeks of age or older and 2 or more pounds. This product is a flea treatment that starts working in 30 minutes and is used in instances where the animal needs immediate relief from fleas. There is no residual (long lasting) effect on fleas.

Heartgard Plus - a once a month flavored chewable given orally to dogs 6 weeks of age and older. This product treats for heartworms, round worms, and hookworms. A heartworm test and an exam within the past year are required before this medication can be prescribed.

- Feline Wellness -

Rabies - A viral disease that infects both animal and humans. This virus attacks the brain and is very fatal. The virus can be shed in the saliva of the infected animal bite wounds are the usual means of transmission. The skunk, raccoon, bat and fox are common carrier of the virus. The rabies vaccination is required by law, they are very safe and effective. The vaccine is given the first time at 16 weeks of age and then annually.

FVRCP - Feline Panleukopenia Virus is an uncommon disease today due to widespread vaccination although risk does remain if your feline is not vaccinated. When disease occurs it is severe and often fatal. Symptoms include profound depression, dehydration and collapse. There are also other vaccines for upper respiratory diseases included in this vaccine. These are serious and can cause many long term problems for your cat. Vaccinations for these respiratory diseases significantly reduce severity and duration of the disease. Chlamydia, the last disease vaccinated against, is a bacterial infection and will cause painful inflammation and swelling around the eye. Vaccinations will help prevent these infections for you cat.

FeLV - Feline Leukemia Virus is a contagious viral disease that wears many different faces. It can cause a large number of different types of problems and can be transmitted from mother to kitten. There is no cure for the leukemia virus. After the booster series, your cat should be vaccinated annually.

FIV - Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is the Feline Aids virus. In many ways, it acts like the AIDS virus in humans. It too is contagious from cat to cat and is not curable. It is transmitted sexually by bite wound, saliva and blood. FIV can and should be tested for annually if they are at risk by going outside or living with another cat that has the disease. After the booster series, your cat should be vaccinated annually.
